The Vampire Shrimp, also known as Atyopsis Gabonensis or African Fan Shrimp, is a freshwater invertebrate that belongs to the Atyidae family. Its unique appearance and behaviour make it a captivating addition to any aquarium.
Habitat:
Native to West Africa, the Vampire Shrimp is commonly found in rivers and streams with slow-moving or stagnant water. They are known to inhabit areas with dense vegetation, rocks, and driftwood.
To provide a suitable environment for the Vampire Shrimp, a well-established aquarium with a minimum capacity of 10 gallons is recommended. The tank should have ample hiding places such as caves, plants, and driftwood. It is important to maintain stable water parameters and ensure proper filtration.
Diet:
Vampire Shrimp are omnivorous and primarily feed on detritus, algae, and small organisms. They are excellent scavengers and will actively clean the aquarium by consuming leftover food and debris. Supplementing their diet with high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables is recommended.
Size:
When fully grown, Vampire Shrimp can reach a size of approximately 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm). They have a slow growth rate, and it may take several months for them to reach their maximum size.
Behavioural Traits:
Vampire Shrimp are known for their unique fan-like appendages, which they use to filter feed and capture food particles from the water. They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. These shrimp are nocturnal and will often hide during the day, becoming more active during the evening and night.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)
- pH: 6.5 to 7.5
